Maroli
On this special night, we were privileged to be taken on a journey through a rare and outrageously delicious cuisine, where every single bite was an utter delight and an amazing journey into the tasty unknown. Maroli's is truly a wonderful lesson in the richness of Malabarian culture here fused with Portuguese, Dutch, British, French and Arabic elements. Lucky Toronto! Exotically spiced in the deepest and most flavourful sense of the word, our experience at Maroli's Special Event Tasting Night, can be described as stupendous, titillatingly delicious, truly a spice lovers paradise. The Mussels, cooked and stuffed with spiced rice flour then refried, sent us immediately into food heaven. Their signature dish, Malabari Chicken, puts all others to shame; fresh 'pancakes' called pathiri, made of ground rice and coconut, shrimp malabari, oyster stew, squid thoran and many other rare, tasty and special dishes were all gratefully enjoyed. Malabar is noted for its variety of pancakes and steamed rice cakes, biryani made of mutton, chicken, egg and fish. Meen moilee(a Greenish yellow fish curry), meen mulligattathu(a fiery sardine Curry), and peera pattichathu(a dry fish dish of grated coconut), oyster stewed in coconut sauce and the pan fried sardines are also fabulous staples of a Malabari diet. Another interesting feature is their abundant use of coconut, coconut oil,and coconut milk, add mustard seeds and curry leaves then go straight to heaven. Slow-cooked beef, specially spiced in Tumeric and Pepper, cooked kingfish, lentil patties, and fresh roti's flakier than I've ever experienced before...words could never do this gorgeous food justice. You simply must experience Maroli's for yourself. Siju the head chef is amazing. Thank you Naveem and Snigdha, you are utterly charming hosts! What a treat! 630 Bloor St. W. 416-483-5393
